Watch Out for the Experts

Who knew that the Internet would be as widely used as it is today? The inventors certainly did not have the intention to create something this big. With a growing netizen population, e-business is also becoming more and more prominent. Currently, a small amount of people control a large amount of information on and about the Web.

Due to this asymmetric information, some have found ways to exploit those less web-savvy. Many talk a lot about how they can help others create a website, logo or do other web work - and when you see their portfolio, it looks like something you did at 12. The problem is that many traditional businesses have absolutely no idea about how a website should look or work, and are often lulled into buying overpriced services.

I just read a blog post about someone who encountered something similar, a SEO (search engine optimization) Company calls him up and… well, just read his post. In this case, these people were caught by someone knowledgeable, but who knows how many others they’ve managed to sell their seemingly sub-par services to?

This post should serve as a warning to those seeking to purchase web services, be very careful and always research exactly what you want and what such services cost - usually web services are much cheaper than you’d expect. There are those who make a living feeding off newbies on the Internet. ;) Watch out for local (those targeted on and active only within your small community) businesses. Also watch out for the do-it-alls (those who claim they can do anything from hosting, design, marketing, SEO, etc), most of the time this means they can’t do anything well. Do not immediately think that someone using foreign, internet terms automatically knows what they are talking about. Finally, check their portfolios, and see what they have actually achieved, not only what they have made. Surprisingly, the internet does not follow the same “build, and they will come” rule as traditional brick-and-mortar businesses.

Good luck on your online ventures! :D
